I am very close to giving this an A- but need to try it again to make sure. Regardless, it's a very good whisky if you like Laphroaig. Side by side with Lagavulin 16 (my south Islay benchmark), I preferred this. The nose has the maple syrup sherry mixed with gauze and iodine and sea air, and wet Islay peat bog. The palate is something like a cask strength version of Laphroaig 15, but richer with all of the syrup, medicinal, and peat flavors. A hint of salt and pepper. And the finish turns to more of the sweetness, lighter syrup. Long and satisfying.
I tried all three of the first releases (La1, Ar1, CI1) together and this one was my favorite. A rather lemony version of Laphroaig, big peat with a lot of spicy zing. Good stuff.
