A vatting of 2 sherry butts from 1951 (casks 1541 and 1542). Distilled December 20 1951. Note that this is often referred to as a 50-year-old. 632 bottles.
N: Huge sherry, maple syrup, malty goodness. Best nose ever. P: Interesting deep malty woodiness, but has certainly mellowed with age. Not the big sherry body I expected from the nose. Has some medicinal notes making me wonder if a little of the old Macallan peat I've heard about is in there. F: Long and warming, fruity sherry, somewhat dry.
Nose is syrupy, with sherry and dried apricots. The palate is ridiculously gentle, yet full-bodied. There's sherry of course, dried fruit and spice, and maybe a little smoke. A tangy aspect is in the palate as well. The finish is quite long, and builds in a slow crescendo. It's here that the flavors reach their full peak, about 7 seconds in. Most present in the finish are spice and oak, and something vaguely fruity. This is the definition of "Gentle Giant," and impossible not to enjoy.
