N: Seems like mostly (or all) refill sherry, more on resinous wood spice and sweet nectar. P: Delicious spice with underlying dessert notes. I was expecting a big sherried 40 year for some reason, but this is perhaps even better. Really tasty stuff. F: Buttery, liquefied caramel candies. Unexpected and delightfully good.
A really balanced and clean nose, sherried and deeply fruity, quite sweet and berry-ish. Pomegranate, plums, resin.
Palate is syrupy and delicious, a tinge of sweetness, follows in line with the nose. Incredibly drinkable and on the milder side. Finish is not nearly as tannic as I'd expect.
Very, very nice stuff that's way too easy to drink.
The nose on this is pretty wondrous. It starts with Welch's grape juice moves to sherry notes with raisins and then on to tropical fruit, maple syrup and vanilla extract. The palate starts with vanilla candy and has soft sherry notes ending with a slight bitterness. Water brings out some woody notes. The finish has sherry, vanilla, creamsicle.
This is highly drinkable, well balanced and lots of fun. It's nicely sherried without being a sherry bomb. If this were more affordable, it would be the type of thing I'd want to drink every day.
This is definitely a sherry bomb. All the lovely sherry goodness of stewed fruits, dark raisin and black currants are very pronounced and not sickly sweet. The underlying spice and woodiness is fairly dry while bursts of leather and dark chocolate come through as it breathes. This is very balanced and not pretentious. The sherry component rides into the palate but the fruits here tastes of the brighter red variety (boysenberry, raspberry and strawberry) and are quite tangy. Dark licorice, coffee and black teas follow in tow of the fruity vanguard leading way to a lingering astringent yet spicy finish.
This has great body and structure to it and it's pretty hard to get sick of. There is a slightly weird funk to the sherry in this, but it is very minor and easily forgotten given what this malt has to offer. I thought this would be overly sherried and too sweet at 40 years, but it has just the amount of sweetness and a nice bitter component to balance things out. A/A-
