Caramelized sugar nose, light and fluffy, very smooth. Nice sugar in the finish. Starts and finishes well, but missing something in the middle. For $150, you can do so much better, why buy this? (Note: Original rating was B+. But when I tasted it blind in our March 2008 "Blends" meeting, I actually gave this a C-. Prior to the start of the meeting, I had sampled liberally from my favorite single malts in the reserves, and this in comparison was just so uninteresting. Not sure if this was fair, but in general, I think Johnnie Blue is a cheap whore in a fancy dress. I would never recommend that anyone buy this, so to be consistent with our rating system, I think C+ is a fair grade.
Nose of honey and strong-sweet floral notes. Goes in easy, develops into smokey yumminess which lingers in a pleasing sweet finish. Not an overwhelming whisky, but enjoyable and certainly quaffable. Finish is the best part, but not great enough. Buy something else for this money. B.
I have had this bottle for a long time. I often get friends who see it to beg me for a taste which I am happy to provide. But I always offer them a single malt (right next to it) and they always enjoy the single malt better.
Probably the best of the blends but the price is simply way out of the ballpark for what this is. Very nice and easy to drink if you like blends....I usually do not.
N: Gently malty, sweet. Faint peat but not too powerful.
P: Medium-light mouthfeel. Somewhat sweet, faintly peaty. Gentle heat - just a touch of pepper. Malty and a bit of sweetness. Faint saltiness.
F: Smooth, light finish. A slight bit of heat on the finish - a little pepper and plenty of malt. After a bit there's some woody mustiness.
It's plainly middle of the road. Not much happening - it's similar to an older malt that's aged past its prime and lost some fire. The faint heat and smoke gives it some personality but it's still pretty milquetoats. That said, at 40% and sweet and malty, it's drinkable. But that's a high price to pay for blandness.
