A blend of four different Four Roses bourbons: 17 year old OBSV, 11 year old WBSV, 12 year old OBSK and 12 year old OESK. 4,062 bottles. Around $87 in its time.
The nose on this is really wonderful with all kinds of things going on. A first whiff reveals fresh cherries, followed by a nice dose of briny rye spice, tobacco and wood notes. The palate carries the same complexity. The briny rye spice is there but also a sort of light perfume note that intensifies the tobacco from the nose. The tobacco and rye spice really stand out on the finish which is quite lengthy and delicious. Water brings out some anise notes and some acid that add to the picture.
This is really fantastic stuff. It's packed with flavor and has a complexity that shows new dimensions with every sip.
N: Nice spice up front - fresh black pepper, a little cinnamon, some background nutmeg. A little mix of clay earthiness, but there's some prominent wood. Caramel, a little fudge, some molasses. A little mint and cedar aroma too. Corn at the heart.
P: Thick and syrupy mouthfeel, a little wood leads and then continues to build. Sweet, lightly vegetal (in an entirely pleasing way) corn body with a little cherry accent. Hints of oranges, moments of brief saltiness, caramel sweetness and a little hint of apples.
F: Leads with wood, black cherries and cinnamon, lasts and lasts. Very rich and strong finish; a hint of vegetal character that really works well when held as a counterpoint to the sweetness and wood quality. A little hint of waxy apple as it dries faintly.
Ridiculously complex but totally accessible, full bodied and not overproofed, sweet but not cloying. Probably the best bourbon all year. Slam dunk, easy A.
Palate is a mix of corn, rye, and others... kind of an oatmealy thing with rye most distinct. Requisite bourbon spices in the background, all on a bed of dried fall berries (cranberries, cherries). Nice complexity here.
Finish is lengthy, rich, decently oaky and gripping, and satisfying. Best part of the package.
This opens up excellently, blossoming with extra notes of evergreen and skunky stuff, among other darker flavors.
