N: Same sloe gin nose as the four grain, just smells young, but then some fruit and spice. P: Grassy rye, seems a little watery actually but tastes decent enough. F: Lingering Jolly Rancher candy, again a bit watery. This shows some promise, I'll be interested to try it with a few more years of aging. Recommend going to 50% abv.
Well the nose is definitely rye. The palate is basically a decent though rough-edged rye -- just enough sweetness to be noticeable -- with the youth evident in a fun and rambunctious way. This seems geared a bit more for tasting and special situations than pure enjoyment.
Batch 3, 2008: The Manhattan Rye has a very nice nose. It's a very tempered rye spice, very subtle and sophisticated, particularly for a very young whiskey. The flavor has a lot of spice, but it's different than traditional rye spice. I taste a lot of South Asian curry-type flavors. This does very well with a few drops of water which takes off the edge and highlights the rye.
