Nose - oh God, one of these again. Sherry onslaught of the most beautiful kind, with skunky aspects and dried berries rounding it out. Seems more muted than my memory of Cask 718. As it opens up, chocolate, more berries and all kinds of pie filling, old floorboards... wow this nose really blossoms. WOW.
Palate -- yep. Deeply rich, raisiny, dried-fruits stuff that 20 years earlier would probably be sweet and punchy and all over the place, but the age seems to have morphed this into a more restrained experience. But still quite powerful. Gets slightly minty in the finish. The oak is here but not overwhelmingly present.
I wish it were cheaper, but don't we always? Damn good. A/A-
I found more sulphur than others, but the good kind. This is my fifth 1972 38/39 year old Glendronach and they all rate nearly the same - terrific, deep, heavy sherried greatness.
This one is slightly more chocolatey than I recall from others. Stewed prunes always comes to mind even though I am not sure exactly what that is. Leather in the finish with some tobacco as it lingers long.
Maybe not the greatest of the several sister casks I have tried but still a solid A for me. I think we damn near killed the bottle at the tasting.
N: Coffee grounds, raw awesomeness (ok, that's a bit silly but whatever), dark cherries, rancio, cooked apples. P: Wow, yum yum. Rich sherry with some medicinal (cough drops) and gamey (beef brisket dripping with fat) notes. F: Cinnamon spice. This whisky doesn't suck!!!!
Rich, deep copper color. Syrup and good sulfur on the nose. Really sets you up for a deep experience...because the palate blew my mind when it switched gears into an explosion sherry bomb. Really complex though and flavors all over the place (including some wood). Finish goes for miles. [3/20/12]
